action

After the death of her husband, the energetic young widow Marcella Baralli tries to build her own existence and moves from Emilia-Romagna to Bologna , where she lives on the verge of subsistence. At least with a small amount of her husband's inheritance, she could find a modest shop where she pinned her hopes for a better future. Renting an apartment was much more difficult and failed again and again because Marcella talked about her nine underage children. So it came about that when she applied for an apartment again, she passed herself off as single to her landlady, even though she is the mother of three boys and six girls between the ages of five and twelve.

Your landlady and her husband, a well-to-do couple, are childless and have no idea of the new tenant's number of children. Even the move in of the children has to be meticulously planned by Marcella and moved to a time when almost everyone in the house is already sleeping. However, Marcella has prepared her children well so that everything goes smoothly. Leaving the house the next morning is also no problem thanks to the discipline of the children. Shortly before half past seven, everyone is together in the back room of Marcella Laden and has their breakfast there before they go to kindergarten or school. The next day, Marcella helps the old milkman Tognone with her campaign to get the children back into the house. Everything is going well over the winter. But then spring approaches. And it happened by chance that the landlady discovered the children in the apartment. When Marcella comes home that day, she is expected there with the sarcastic statement that she is the childless widow who got the apartment based on this information. Impressed by the fact that the presence of the children was not noticed for so many months, the landlady, contrary to expectations, is initially satisfied and keeps what she now knows to herself. Marcella has credibly assured her that the presence of the children will not disturb anyone in the house in the future and that she will move out as soon as she has found suitable accommodation for herself and the children. But none of this leaves the landlady in peace and so she becomes a silent observer of the children and their behavior.

A few days later, the landlady asks Marcella to come over, and the young woman notices a portrait that shows the landlady with a beautiful baby in her arms. The baby's face is also adorned with a medallion that she wears around her neck. Marcella feels very sad because she knows how difficult it must be for the lady that she has nine healthy children herself. When the landlady again observed the return of the children the following night, after the ninth shadow she saw a tenth shade, much brighter, which turned to her and waves to her when she realized who was smiling at her with confidence, filling up her eyes with tears.

criticism

“(Theatrical) film based on a story by the 'Don Camillo' author Giovanni Guareschi, which initially describes the simplicity of rural life in carefully selected pictures, exudes charm and joie de vivre and repeatedly evokes the diverse happiness of motherhood, but then flattens out and turns into a series of clichés and sentimentalities.
