Rita Tushingham (born March 14, 1942 in Liverpool , England ) is a British actress .

Life

Rita Tushingham was already active in the school theater of her convent and then attended acting classes at the Liverpool Playhouse. She made her professional stage debut in 1960 in her hometown. In 1961 she made her film debut with the film Bitter Honey , directed by Tony Richardson , which brought her the Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1962 as well as the Golden Globe and British Film Academy Awards for Best Young Actress . In this film drama belonging to the British New Wave , she played the risky role of a youngster from a poor background who, out of boredom, enters into affairs and finally becomes pregnant. In 1965 she appeared in Doctor Zhivago within the framework of the film as a simple worker whose origins are a mystery. A year later she impressed a year in Like a Scream in the Wind alongside Oliver Reed in a leading role. James Ivory used her image as a representative of " Swinging London " for his film The Guru (1969), which looks at developments in the British music scene.

It was particularly successful in the 1960s and was one of the icons of British cinema of that time. In the 1970s, Tushingham was noticeably less popular in England. so that she was looking for new roles on the European continent. Tushingham played in several Italian comedies. Her first marriage was to Terence William Bicknell. With her second husband, the photographer and director Ousama Rawi , she lived in Canada for 20 years , where they shot the thriller A Judgment in Stone in 1986 . The director Horst Königstein cast her in 1990 in the German television film Hard Days, Hard Nights , once again based on her 1960s image.

In the 1990s, Tushingham lived partly in England and Germany .
