Çamburnu is a mountain village on the Black Sea in Trabzon Province , Turkey . It has 1,764 inhabitants (as of 2007).

Planned landfill

In the mid / late 1990s, the Turkish state decided to create a landfill above the village. Garbage from the cities of Trabzon and Rize as well as 49 other communities is to be stored in a former copper mine, an estimated 600 tons of garbage per day. The project led to resistance from the village community that continues to this day. She is now supported by well-known personalities such as the German politician Claudia Roth and the filmmaker Fatih Akın , who started a documentary film project on the subject in April 2007 under the working title The Garbage in the Garden of Eden . The film was shown in Germany in December 2012. Akın's grandparents come from Çamburnu.
