content

The film is set in the city of Diyarbakır in southeastern Turkey. Ten-year-old Gülistan, her slightly younger brother Fırat and a few months old sister Dilovan live in a middle-class Kurdish family. The father works for a Kurdish-language newspaper, the mother's sister is very politically active. An acquaintance of hers, who has to go into hiding, stays with the family for a few days. The following weekend, the parents were shot by members of the JITEM on their way back from a wedding in front of the children .

The aunt looks after the children for the first few days. To get travel documents for Stockholm , she sets off for Istanbul - and never comes back. The children stay afloat for a while by selling what they can do without in terms of furnishings. But at some point the money will be used up for good. The little sister dies. The landlord, who deferred the rent for several months, puts Fırat and Gülistan on the street.

Little by little, they become familiar with life on the street. There are many children there who share their fate. Most of them fled here because of the destruction of their villages by the Turkish military. The twelve year old Zelal shows them how to get reluctant passers-by to buy paper handkerchiefs and lighters. Gülistan befriends Dilan, a prostitute. Together they spend the hours of the day when Dilan is not doing her job. Fırat becomes part of a youth gang. All children participate in a mobile sales booth that promises more income than begging with pennies. But the great promise is Istanbul. You get there in the car and under the thumb of men who make no secret of the fact that the children are no picnic there.

Both children encounter their parents' murderer independently of each other. Gülistan is with Dilan's company. She ensures that she is taken to the apartment in which he lives with his wife and child and wants to use Dilan's services during their absence. Gülistan steals the gun with which he shot her parents. She toyed with the idea of killing him in turn, but the retaliation that she later organizes together with the other children is more lasting: On leaflets that appear all over the neighborhood one morning, they inform about his membership in the JITEM. This strategy is known to Gülistan and Fırat from the fairy tale of the wolf, which is rendered harmless by hanging a bell around its neck so that it can no longer sneak up on a victim unnoticed.

The film ends with a journey into an uncertain but probably not very bright future: together with a dozen other boys and girls, they get into a car that will turn them into Istanbul street children.

background

The film is a German-Turkish co-production. It was filmed in Kurdish and Turkish.

Die Welt reported: “Miraz Bezar did not receive any funding for his film. My own money was soon used up, then that of friends. Eventually the parents sold their house so that Bezar could continue filming. In the end, Fatih Akin stepped in and helped that "Before my Eyes" was finished: a feature film about a sibling couple whose parents are murdered by the state security in Diyarbakir and who are fighting for survival. "

Many children were involved in the film and, despite the tough subject matter, it is also well suited for a young audience. The story is child-friendly, depictions of violence are usually only hinted at. In Germany it is approved by the FSK from 12 years of age or from 6 years when accompanied by a parent.
