The fairy tale of fairy tales (original title: Il racconto dei racconti ) is a fairy tale film by the director Matteo Garrone from 2015. The Italian-French-British coproduction is based on the fairy tale collection Pentameron by the Italian writer Giambattista Basile, which was published between 1634 and 1636 .
action
The film is based on the three stories The Flea , The Insidious Doe and The Abused Old Woman . The three fairy tales are told in parallel and loosely interwoven.
The Queen of Longtrellis wants nothing more than to have a child, but that is impossible for her. A mysterious age explains to her that she must eat the heart of a sea monster, but also warns her of the dire consequences. Her husband, the king, nevertheless sets out to grant his wife's wish. During the fight with the sea monster, the king is mortally wounded, but he succeeds in killing the sea monster. The heart is prepared by a kitchen maid. Like the queen, she becomes pregnant after consuming her heart and both women give birth to a child after just one night. A few years later, the king's son Elias and the maid's son, Jonah, are close friends. The Queen disapproves of the relationship, which eventually culminates in a murder attempt on Jonah after hearing how the identical boys plan to switch roles. Jonah then leaves the courtyard. He leaves a spring, the water of which is supposed to show the remaining Elias whether Jonah is well. After a while the water becomes cloudy and Elias goes in search of Jonah, who fell into a hole in the ground in a forest. The Queen makes a pact with the old man and turns into a winged monster that attacks Jonah. Elias rushes to his aid and kills the monster. When the boys leave, the monster turns back into the dead queen.
The King of Strongcliff hears the two old women Imma and Dora singing, and because of the beautiful voices he thinks he heard a young woman. From then on he tries to seduce the supposedly beautiful young stranger. Dora eventually goes to the castle and spends the night with the king on condition that he extinguish all candles. When the king realizes in the morning that he has slept with an old woman, he has Dora thrown out the window. The sheets that Dora is wrapped in stay in the trees so that she remains unharmed. A mysterious old woman finds her and gives her milk to drink from her breast. Thereupon Dora turns into a beautiful young woman. She marries the king who doesn't know who she is. Her sister Imma tries to find out how Dora could become so beautiful. Dora explains defensively that she has shed her skin. Imma then has her skin peeled off in the city and runs back to the castle as a bloody horror figure. In the end, Dora begins to transform back into an old woman and runs away from the king.
Princess Violet wants to be married, which her father, the king of Highhills, fears. He's also more concerned with a flea that he keeps like a pet and that grows to gigantic sizes. When the flea dies, the king has it skin and promises Violet to the one who can determine the animal from which the skin came. All applicants fail until an ogre solves the task. Against Violet's will, she has to go with the ogre who keeps her trapped in his cave and raped her. A group of showmen discovers Violet and uses a rope to rescue her from the cave. But the ogre follows them and kills Violet's savior. Finally, the princess pretends to want to go with the ogre again and at a favorable moment cuts his throat. She brings the ogre's head to her father. Finally he has Violet crowned ruler. The King of Strongcliff and Elias are also present at the celebrations.
