Mehmet Emin Toprak (born October 11, 1974 in Yenice , † December 2, 2002 in Çan , Çanakkale ), also known under the name Emin Toprak , was a Turkish actor .

Life

Mehmet Emin Toprak made his acting debut in 1998 under the direction of his cousin Nuri Bilge Ceylans in Stadt , the director's feature film debut and at the same time the first part of a trilogy about the differences between rural and urban life in Turkey. The drama tells, from the perspective of a child, of everyday life and growing up in the Turkish province. A year later followed a supporting role in the second part of the trilogy, Distress in May . The drama focuses on the young Muzaffer (played by Muzaffer Özdemir ) who is returning to Anatolia , to his hometown, to realize a film project with his family members. There the filmmaker is confronted with the problems of parents and relatives: his cousin dreams of a future in Istanbul, while Muzaffer's father is in danger of losing a piece of forest to the land registry . The strongly autobiographical film (father and mother are played by the director's parents) was praised by the daily newspaper for its almost Buddhist calm and the unusual editing technique, while the New York Times compared the work with the works of Abbas Kiarostami . Distress in May won a number of international film and festival awards , including the FIPRESCI award at the 2000 European Film Awards and awards from the Angers , Ankara , Antalya , Bergamo and Istanbul film festivals .

Toprak's breakthrough as an actor paved the way for another collaboration with Nuri Bilge Ceylan in 2002 on the drama Uzak - Weit (2002), the last part of the trilogy. Here, the Turkish actor again acts alongside Muzaffer Özdemir as the young father of a family, Yusuf, who comes to Istanbul to take care of his family who have stayed in the province. In his youthful zeal, Yusuf tries in vain to find a job on a ship in the Turkish city, while his relative, a successful advertising photographer, is plunged into an existential crisis by his presence . Uzak - Weit celebrated its premiere in Turkey at the end of 2002 and brought Mehmet Emin Toprak the Supporting Actor Award at the Antalya Film Festival .

Just under two months after receiving the award, the married Toprak died in a traffic accident in Çanakkale , western Turkey, at the age of 28. Posthumously, Mehmet Emin Toprak for the part of Yusuf and his film colleague Muzaffer Özdemir were the first and so far only Turkish actors to receive the award for the best actor of the festival at the Cannes International Film Festival. Uzak - Weit also received positive reviews in Germany, where the film was only released three years after it was made . The characters are cold, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung , which compared the film with works by Andrei Tarkowski .
