Kohei Oguri
Kōhei Oguri ( Japanese 小 栗 康 平 , Oguri Kōhei ; born October 29, 1945 in Maebashi , Gunma Prefecture ) is a Japanese film director .
Life
Oguri completed a theater degree at the Waseda University Literature Institute and then worked as a freelance assistant director for Masahiro Shinoda ( Shinjū: Ten no Amijima , 1969; Himiko , 1974) and Nobuhiko Ōbayashi ( Hausu , 1977), among others . Oguri made his debut as a director in 1981 with the black and white film Dirty River . The film drama set in 1956 at Aji-gawa in Osaka based on a novel by Teru Miyamoto is about the friendship of two boys from different backgrounds. The film is considered the "beginning of the new, independent Japanese cinema of the 80s" and was nominated in 1982 for an Oscar in the category of best foreign language film . Oguri's next film was For You, Kayako in 1984 . The love drama based on a template by Hwe-Song Lee dealt with the Koreans, some of whom are now in the second generation of Japan.
Oguri is considered a director who, like Stanley Kubrick, takes a lot of time for new films. It was not until six years after Für Dich, Kayako that Oguri released his new film Sting of Death . The film about a marital crisis was based on a template by Toshio Shimao and was awarded the Grand Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival . In The Sleeping Man , for which he had also written the screenplay for the first time, Oguri put a coma patient at the center of his film in 1996, while Umoregi - The Buried Forest combines various narratives and puts the visual experience in the foreground without any actual plot. Ten years after Umoregi - The Buried Forest , Oguri brought out Foujita , a film biography for the first time. The role of the eccentric painter Tsuguharu Foujita took over the " Johnny Depp of Japan", Joe Odagiri .
