Kürtün is a city in the northeast Turkish province of Gümüşhane and at the same time the administrative center of the district of the same name in the province of Giresun . The city is located about 69 km (44 km by road) northwest of the provincial capital Gümüşhane . Geographically, Kürtün is located southwest of the Zigana Mountain , surrounded by the Pontic Mountains in the valley of the Harşit Çayı River .

The county was formed in 1990 from the northwestern part of Torul County. Until then there was a Bucak in this district and at the last census before the change of area (1985) it had a population of 15,850, of which the Bucak capital ( Bucak Merkezi ), the municipality of Çayra, accounted for. The district borders in the southeast on the district of Torul and has the province Gİresun as neighbors (four districts) in the southwest and southeast and the province Trabzon (two districts) in the northeast .

Economically, the district is one of the structurally weakest regions in Turkey, which are primarily characterized by agriculture. As a result, there is increasing migration to the big cities in western Turkey.

At the end of 2018, the district included the district town (almost a third of the district's population) with Özkürtün (2,008 inhabitants) from another municipality and from 34 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 229 residents. Üçtaş is the largest village (1,079 pop .)
