Hasan Fehmi Bey (Ataç) (* 1879 in Gümüşhane ; † September 16, 1961 ) was a Turkish politician and a member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly . As a member of the assembly, Hasan Fehmi Bey was a member of parliament for his hometown of Gümüşhane. After the end of his mandate he was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Finance by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk .

Life

Fehmi was born to Kadirbeyzade Mehmet Salim Bey. Hasan Fehmi attended the local Rüştiye school in the Süleymaniye district of Gümüşhane. In the 1912 elections in the Ottoman Empire, Hasan Fehmi Bey became a member of the Chamber of Deputies for Gümüşhane. He was also elected to the new Grand National Assembly of Turkey and remained a MP from the first through the eighth term. At a secret session of the National Assembly on October 17, 1920, Hasan Fehmi Bey commented on the genocide of the Armenians as follows:

“As you know, the [Armenian] deportations were an event that sparked outcry around the world and portrayed us as murderers. Before this event, we knew that the Christian world would not allow us, and because of this, it would turn its full anger and deep enmity against us. Why did we add the murderer's title to ourselves? Why did we get involved in such a serious and difficult conflict? We therefore acted simply to guarantee the future of our fatherland, which we consider dearer and more sacred than our own lives. "

Fehmi Bey also provided evidence of the confiscation of Armenian goods and property at another secret meeting :

“Not one Muslim has been expropriated. One can substantiate these facts by examining the old protocols of the secret deliberations. Parliament then secretly received assurances from the finance minister that the law would be applied to Muslims who had fled as a result of the war. Only after this assurance did we proclaim this law to the world. "

On April 24, 1922, Hasan Fehmi Bey was appointed Minister of Finance by Ataturk, which he remained until January 2, 1925. During his tenure as finance minister, Fehmi Bey managed to get the necessary food for the Turkish army after the Turkish liberation war . From November 22, 1924 to March 3, 1925, Fehmi Bey also served as Minister of Agriculture.

Fehmi Ataç was married and had one child. He was also awarded the Medal of Independence with a Red-Green Ribbon.
