The Ecevit I cabinet was the 37th government of Turkey , which was led by Prime Minister Naim Talu from January 26, 1974 to November 17, 1974 .
The election to the National Assembly in Turkey in 1973 surprisingly won the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) by Bülent Ecevit . As general secretary of the party once founded by Ataturk, Ecevit had decreed a moderate left and social democratic program against the will of conservative forces. After he resigned in protest against the support of the repressive governments directed by the Security Council by the CHP, he ousted İsmet İnönü from the party leadership and consistently implemented the party's new course. Although the former Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel was the favorite in the election, the CHP was able to win the majority, while the Adalet Partisi (AP) lost massively. The Cumhuriyetçi Güven Partisi (CGP), founded by Ecevit opponents and traditionalist Kemalists , only got 5.3 percent. Necmettin Erbakan was able to re-establish the pro-Islamic party Millî Nizam Partisi , which was banned in 1971, under the name Millî Selamet Partisi (MSP) and immediately received 11.8 percent.
President Fahri Korutürk entrusted Ecevit with forming a government, which, however, turned out to be difficult. Most parties could not do much with the social reform course of the CHP. It was not until January 1974 that the CHP and MSP surprisingly agreed on a government program, which, however, did not contain any major reforms. One could only agree on the establishment of a social economy with state-controlled development planning and more social justice. The new government was unable to contain the sharp rise in unemployment.
The coalition's short term in office was marked by the increasing violence of left-wing revolutionary groups and right-wing extremist Gray Wolves commandos , which covered the country with terror. However, the domestic political situation took a back seat when the Cypriot National Guard overthrew President Makarios on July 15, 1974, with the backing of the military junta in Athens , and forced Cyprus to join Greece. After Great Britain refused to intervene as a guarantor of the independence of Cyprus, Ecevit sent Turkish troops to Northern Cyprus on July 20. Although the UN brokered a ceasefire, the violence between Cypriot Greeks and Turks suddenly continued. The Turkish troops then occupy 40 percent of the area of Cyprus.
In the weeks that followed, Ecevit and Erbakan had more disagreements. Ecevit terminated the coalition on September 18, 1974 because he hoped to win in early elections. However, due to the increased popularity of Ecevit because of the Cyprus conflict, the other parties did not want to risk an election. In search of new majorities, the country was without an effective government for several months. On November 17, parliament elected Sadi Irmak , a new prime minister with a minority cabinet made up of CGP and independents, but this became the plaything of the big parties.
