Ulrich Köstlin

Ulrich Köstlin (born December 31, 1952 in Stuttgart ) is a German business lawyer , former manager in the pharmaceutical industry and art collector.

Live and act

After graduating from high school, Ulrich Köstlin studied law at the universities of Tübingen, Erlangen and Geneva. In the meantime, he had also enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he obtained his Master of Laws in 1978 with his thesis Regulating transnational securities activity: pending issues under Federal case law . Four years later, Köstlin did his doctorate at the University of Tübingen with the dissertation " Investor protection and foreign relations: a comparative study on the law of the cross-border capital market taking into account German and US law and European legal approximation ".

Already before that, in 1982, Köstlin started as a management trainee at Schering AG in Berlin and was employed as managing director of various subsidiaries of Schering AG in Latin America from 1983 to 1986 . He then took over the management of the pharmaceutical division for Latin America and Canada. In 1990 Köstlin took over the functions of Vice President for Marketing and Sales and Head of the Diagnostics Business Unit in the American subsidiary Berlex Laboratories, Inc. Montville, New Jersey , USA.

From 1993 he was appointed to the Pharma Executive Committee of Schering AG and a year later he was appointed to the Management Board of Schering AG. After the merger with Bayer AG in 2006 to form Bayer Schering Pharma AG , Köstlin was a member of the board of this new company until 2011. Here he was responsible for the operational business in the regions Europe, Canada, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Japan and the USA. After he came out as homosexual in 2003 , he retired as the last manager of the former Schering AG in mid-2011 as part of a further restructuring of the company to Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals.

In addition to his main occupation, Ulrich Köstlin was and is active in numerous committees, including:

• Member of the supervisory board of the waste disposal and recycling company ALBA AG , Berlin (until 2011)
• Chairman of the Board of Directors of Newron Pharmaceuticals SpA, Milan
• Member of the supervisory board of Constantia Flexibles Group GmbH, Vienna
• Member of the supervisory board of the University Hospital Würzburg
• Member of the board and treasurer of the cultural group of the German economy in the Federation of German Industry , Berlin (until 2011)
• Member of the board of the Humboldt-Universitäts-Gesellschaft - Association of Friends, Former and Sponsors e. V.
• Member of the Board of Trustees of the Herbert Turnauer Foundation, Vaduz

In addition, Köstlin supports various cultural and architectural projects in a variety of ways and has been living in a house on Berlin's Kronenstrasse since 2005, which he restored and which, on 540 square meters, houses part of his art collection, which he has been intensifying since 2011. He is currently working to ensure that the Villa Köstlin , which was formerly owned by the family and built by Christian Reinhold Köstlin in 1842/43 and is now a listed building, is located at Rümelinstraße 27 in Tübingen, where the Center for Islamic Theology has been a facility of the University of Tübingen since 2011 , is made available again for poetry readings and musical soirees, as they took place there for many decades in the 19th century. He also supports the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung's cultural projects and plans to build his own houses in order to provide new impulses himself.

In November 2012 Ulrich Köstlin was made an Honorary Senator of the University of Tübingen for his services .

Ulrich Köstlin was married to Diemut von und zu Liechtenstein (* 1949), with whom he has two adult children. In 2003 he came out as gay and has lived in a registered partnership with Nathan Köstlin ever since .
