Lycium villosum is a plant type from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).
description
Lycium villosum is a 1 to 3 m high, heavily branched, diocese shrub . The leaves and young twigs are densely hairy with bristles. The leaves are 16 to 28 mm long and 2 to 8 mm wide, occasionally they are slightly succulent .
The flowers are four or five-fold. The calyx is trumpet-shaped and densely bristled with glandular and non-glandular trichomes . The calyx tube has a length of 5 to 7 mm and is covered with 2.5 to 3.5 mm long calyx lobes. The crown is broadly half-oval to hemispherical. It is creamy to dirty white in color. The corolla tube is 9 to 12 mm long, the corolla lobes are 1.5 to 2 mm long. The stamens are hairy tomentose at the base.
The fruit is a red, broadly ovate to spherical berry . It is 3 to 5 mm long and 3 to 4 mm wide.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48.
Occurrence
The species is widespread on the African continent and occurs there in South Africa in the Northern Cape Province , as well as in Namibia and Botswana .
Systematics
Within the box thorn ( Lycium ) the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other ancient world species of the genus. Within this clade, the species is closely related to the species Lycium acutifolium , Lycium eenii , Lycium shawii , Lycium schweinfurthii , Lycium bosciifolium and Lycium hirsutum .
