Lycium acutifolium is a plant species from the genus of the buckthorn ( Lycium ) inthe nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Lycium acutifolium is a 1.5 to 3 m tall, upright or sometimes climbing or prostrate shrub . The leaves are hairless, 10 to 23 mm long and 3 to 7 mm wide.

The flowers are hermaphroditic and five-fold. The calyx is bell-shaped and hairless. The calyx tube is 2 to 3 mm long and covered with 0.5 to 0.8 mm long calyx lobes. The crown is half-egg-shaped and spread, it is cream-white in color, the veins are purple. The corolla tube reaches a length of 7 to 8 mm, the corolla lobes are 2 to 3.5 mm long. The base of the stamens is hairy.

The fruit is an egg-shaped or elongated egg-shaped, red berry that reaches a length of 6 to 8 mm and a width of 4 to 5 mm.

Occurrence

The species is widespread on the African continent and occurs there in South Africa in the provinces of Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal , as well as in Mozambique .

Systematics

Within the box thorn ( Lycium ) the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other ancient world species of the genus. Within this clade, the species is closely related to the species Lycium eenii , Lycium shawii , Lycium schweinfurthii , Lycium bosciifolium , Lycium hirsutum and Lycium villosum .
