Lycium shawii is a plant type from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).
description
Lycium shawii is a mostly 1 to 2.5 m high, rarely reaching 4.5 m, spreading, sometimes climbing shrub . Its leaves are slightly succulent and hairless. They become 20 to 35 mm long and 8 to 10 mm wide.
The flowers are hermaphroditic and five-fold. The calyx is narrowly tubular. The calyx tube reaches a length of 3 to 5 mm, the calyx lobes are 0.5 to 0.8 mm long. The crown is elongated and ovate. It is creamy white, the corolla lobes are white or pale mauve with purple veins. The corolla tube is 12 to 16 mm long, the corolla lobes reach 3 to 4 mm. The stamens are hairless.
The fruit is a red, spherical to slightly egg-shaped berry with a diameter of 3 to 5 mm.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
Occurrence
The species is widespread on the African continent and in Eurasia and occurs there in Egypt , Ethiopia , Zimbabwe , Botswana , South Africa , Swaziland , Italy , Israel , India , Kenya , Eritrea , Malawi , Socotra , Somalia , Sudan , Tanzania , Uganda and Zambia in front.
Systematics
Within the box thorn ( Lycium ) the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other ancient world species of the genus. Within this clade, the species is closely related to the species Lycium acutifolium , Lycium eenii , Lycium schweinfurthii , Lycium bosciifolium , Lycium hirsutum and Lycium villosum .
