Lycium schweinfurthii is a plant type from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).
description
Lycium schweinfurthii is a 2 to 3 m high, rigid, upright shrub . Its leaves are succulent and hairless. They become 12 to 20 mm long and 2 to 4 mm wide.
The flowers are hermaphroditic and five-fold. The calyx is bell-shaped and hairless. The calyx tube is 1 to 1.5 mm long and is covered with 0.4 to 0.5 mm long calyx lobes. The crown is broadly hemispherical and spreading. It is colored off-white and has a purple corolla lobe. The corolla tube is 11 to 15 mm long, the corolla lobes 2 to 2.5 mm.
The fruit is a black, spherical to sometimes egg-shaped berry . It measures 4 to 5 mm in diameter.
Occurrence
The species is a southern Mediterranean floral element and occurs in Algeria , Tunisia , Libya , Egypt , Israel , Cyprus , in the southern Aegean ( Crete , Karpathos island group, Rhodes ), in Sicily and on Pantelleria .
Systematics
Within the box thorn ( Lycium ) the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other ancient world species of the genus. Within this clade, the species is closely related to the species Lycium acutifolium , Lycium eenii , Lycium shawii , Lycium bosciifolium , Lycium hirsutum and Lycium villosum . The species is sometimes associated with Lycium intricatum .
