Udo Dammer

Carl Lebrecht Udo Dammer (born January 8, 1860 in Apolda , † November 15, 1920 in Groß Rambin near Kolberg ) was a German botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Dammer ".

Life

Udo Dammer was the oldest child of the chemist Otto Dammer . From 1883 to 1886 he worked as curator at the Botanical Garden in Saint Petersburg and then studied botany in Berlin, where he was also (from 1887 to 1889) assistant to Nathanael Pringsheim . In 1888 he received his doctorate from the University of Freiburg; the title of his dissertation was Contributions to the knowledge of the vegetative organs of Limnobium Stoloniferum Grisebach .

From 1893 to 1919 he was curator at the Botanical Garden in Berlin . In addition, he developed a lively journalistic activity (see below). Therefore, with a patent dated December 21, 1905, the Prussian Minister of Education awarded him the title of professor.

In his last years he lived mainly on his estate in Karlsruhe near Battin . He was also buried there after he was killed in a traffic accident. His wife Elisabeth b. Schrabach, with whom he had two sons, outlived him by six years.

Honor taxon

After him, the carpet medlar ( Cotoneaster dammeri ) from the genus of the dwarf medlar received the species epithet in the scientific name.

In addition, the genus Dammera K.Schum was named in his honor . & Lauterb. of the palm family (Arecaceae).
