Lycium hirsutum is a plant type from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Lycium hirsutum is a 1 to 3 m tall, widespread shrub . Like the young branches, its leaves are hairy. The leaves are 10 to 28 mm long and 4 to 8 mm wide.

The flowers are hermaphroditic and five-fold. The calyx is funnel-shaped and densely covered with bristle trichomes . The calyx tube is 3 to 5 mm long, the calyx lobes reach a length of 4 to 6 mm. The crown is hemispherical and splayed, it is creamy white to dirty white in color, occasionally the veins are purple. The corolla tube is 14 to 20 mm long and is covered with 2 to 3 mm long corolla lobes. The stamens are hairy in a semicircle.

The fruit is a spherical to egg-shaped, red berry that reaches a length of 5 to 6 mm and a width of 4 to 5 mm.

Occurrence

The species is widespread on the African continent and occurs there in South Africa in the provinces of Eastern Cape , Northern Cape , Free State and Northwest , as well as in Botswana and southern Namibia .

Systematics

Within the box thorn ( Lycium ) the species is grouped according to phylogenetic studies in a clade with other ancient world species of the genus. Within this clade, the species is closely related to the species Lycium acutifolium , Lycium eenii , Lycium shawii , Lycium schweinfurthii , Lycium bosciifolium and Lycium villosum .
