Sadık Altıncan

Mehmet Sadık Altıncan (* 1898 in Istanbul ; † February 16, 1963 ) was a Turkish admiral who was last from 1950 to 1957 Commander in Chief of the Navy ( Türk Deniz Kuvetleri ) .

Life

After attending school, Altıncan entered the naval school ( Bahriye Mektebi ) of the naval forces of the Ottoman Empire in 1916 and became a marine engineer on June 14, 1918 . A short time later, during the First World War , he went to Germany on June 22, 1918 and returned to Turkey on May 27, 1919, where he subsequently took part in the Turkish War of Liberation led by Mustafa Kemal Pascha . After this he was an officer on warships and eventually became a submarine commander. In 1930 he became an officer auditor at the Naval Academy ( Deniz Harp Akademisi ) and after its completion in 1933 a staff officer in various naval units, in the fleet and in the headquarters of the General Staff .

After his promotion to Flotilla Admiral in 1945, Altıncan became deputy commander of the warship associations and then deputy commander and head of training at the Naval School ( Deniz Harp Okulu ). In 1948 he was promoted to Rear Admiral and at the same time appointed Deputy Commander in Chief of the Fleet Command.

On June 13, 1950, he was promoted to succeed Admiral Mehmet Ali Ülgen, acting Supreme Commander of the Navy and as such in 1951 to Vice Admiral. On August 30, 1955, Altıncans was finally promoted to admiral and at the same time officially appointed as commander in chief of the navy. He held this position until his voluntary retirement from active military service on September 12, 1957. His successor was Admiral Fahri Korutürk , who later became President of Turkey .
