Mehmet Ali Ülgen (* 1887 in Istanbul ; † July 23, 1952 ibid) was a Turkish admiral who was last from 1949 to 1950 Commander in Chief of the Navy ( Türk Deniz Kuvetleri ).

Life

Training as a naval officer and First World War

After attending school, Ülgen joined the naval school ( Bahriye Mektebi ) of the naval forces of the Ottoman Empire in 1900 and was promoted to lieutenant at sea (Teğmen) after its termination in 1905 . It was then used on the naval forces' training ship and then completed engineering training on the Asar-ı Tevfik armored ship built at the Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée (FCM) shipyard . During the First World War , Ülgen took part in operations against the Russian Black Sea Fleet and its ports of Sevastopol and Odessa in October and November 1914 on board the battle cruiser Yavuz Sultan Selim in the Black Sea . He then became an officer on the protected cruiser Mecidiye , commander of the gunboat Selman-ı Pak and also found various uses in the admiral's staff .

Post-war period, promotion to Admiral and Commander-in-Chief of the Navy

After the end of the First World War, Ülgen became first officer of the steamship Giresun in 1918 and then gun officer on the protected cruiser Mecidiye and the armored cruiser Yavuz Sultan Selim . After working as first officer on the light cruiser Hamidiye , he finally became the commander of the torpedo cruiser Peyk-i Şevket . After being promoted to Korvettenkapitän (Binbaşı) in 1925, he was head of section and then head of department in the Ministry of the Navy and commander of a flotilla until 1934 , before he was employed as an officer in the reconnaissance command and, most recently, with the naval units in the Marmara Sea .

In 1936, Ülgen was promoted to Flotilla Admiral (Tuğamiral) and initially worked in command of the naval units in the Sea of ​​Marmara and the naval bases in the province of Kocaeli , and then deputy commander of the warship squadron. After his promotion to Rear Admiral (Tümamiral) in 1938, he worked in the naval command and then under-secretary for the navy in the Ministry of National Defense (Millî Savunma Bakanlığı) before he returned to the command of the naval units in the Sea of ​​Marmara and the naval bases in the province of Kocaeli.

After being promoted to Vice Admiral (Koramiral) in 1945, Ülgen was promoted to Commander in Chief of the Fleet Command (Donanma Komutanlığı) and finally in 1948 to Admiral (Oramiral) . On July 1, 1949, he was finally Commander in Chief of the Navy ( Türk Deniz Kuvetleri ). Almost a year later, he was retired on June 6, 1950 at his own request and replaced by Vice Admiral Sadık Altıncan .

Ülgen was married and the father of two children.
