Hilmi Fırat

Hilmi Fırat (* 1919 in Istanbul ; † April 10, 1990 ibid) was a Turkish admiral who was last from 1974 to 1977 Commander in Chief of the Navy ( Türk Deniz Kuvvetleri ).

Life

After attending school in 1938, Fırat entered the naval school (Deniz Harp Okulu) and graduated in 1940 as an ensign at sea (Asteğmen) . He then found various uses as an officer on destroyers and as a department head at the naval school. In 1949 he was a graduate of the Naval Academy (Deniz Harp Akademisi) . Later he was commander of the TCG Gaziantep and commodore of the II Destroyer Flotilla.

After his promotion to Flotilla Admiral (Tuğamiral) in 1964, Fırat became Chief of Staff of the Regional Command North (Kuzey Deniz Saha Komutanlığı) in the Istanbul Naval Base and then head of the organizational department in the High Command of the Navy, before becoming deputy commander of the warship squadron. In 1967 he was promoted to Rear Admiral (Tümamiral) and appointed Commander of the Regional Command North.

1970 Fırat was promoted to Vice Admiral (Koramiral) and Chief of Staff of the Navy and Commander in Chief of the Naval Command. On August 23, 1974 he was promoted to Admiral (Oramiral) . At the same time he succeeded Admiral Kemal Kayacan as Supreme Commander of the Navy ( Türk Deniz Kuvvetleri ) and held this post until his replacement by Admiral Bülend Ulusu on August 9, 1977.

A few weeks earlier, on July 25, 1977, he became a member of the Senate of the Republic , of which he was a member until its dissolution on September 12, 1980.
