Eşref Uğur Yiğit

Eşref Uğur Yiğit (* 1945 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish admiral , who was last in command of the naval forces ( Türk Deniz Kuvetleri ) from 2009 to 2011 .

Life

After attending primary and secondary school in Istanbul, Yiğit entered the sea cadet institute ( Deniz Lisesi ) in 1959 and graduated from the naval school ( Deniz Harp Okulu ) in 1964 . It was then used on various warships before graduating from the Naval Academy ( Deniz Harp Akademisi ) from 1975 to 1977 .

Subsequently, he was initially an officer in the department for national planning and organization in the high command of the naval forces and then a planning officer in NATO and then an officer in the operations department of the mine flotilla. After he was Vice-Commander of the miner- destroyer TCG Muavenet (DM-357), he was head of the operations department in the High Command of the Naval Forces and was then an operations planning officer in the Command of the Allied Naval Forces Southern Europe (NAVSOUTH) from 1982 to 1985 . After a year as commander of the destroyer TCG Yücetepe (D-345) he was head of the planning department in the high command of the naval forces between 1986 and 1989 and then chief of staff of the destroyer flotilla until 1990. Subsequently, he was deputy commodore of the destroyer flotilla and head of the operations department in the fleet command.

After his promotion to flotilla admiral , Yiğit became the commandant of the naval school in 1992 and held this position until 1994. He then worked again at the headquarters of NAVSOUTH, where he was head of the planning and policy department until 1996 and then commander of the Dardanelles naval units .

On August 30, 1997 he was promoted to Rear Admiral . As such, he was initially head of the logistics department in the High Command of the Naval Forces and then from 1999 to 2001 commander of the miners' associations before he became head of the control and evaluation department in the High Command of the Naval Forces.

In 2002 Yiğit was promoted to Vice Admiral and initially stayed in his previous post. From 2003 to 2005 he was Chief of Staff in the High Command of the Naval Forces and subsequently became Commander-in-Chief of the Naval Command North ( Kuzey Deniz Saha Komutanlığı ), which is responsible for the Marmara Sea , Black Sea , Bosporus and Dardanelles, among other things .

After he was promoted to admiral on August 30, 2007, he became Commander-in-Chief of the Naval Command ( Donanma Komutanlığı ), which includes the mine-laying, submarine , assault boat , anti-mine vehicle , logistics support and naval aviation associations .

On August 30, 2009, Admiral Yiğit finally succeeded Admiral Metin Ataç as Supreme Commander of the Naval Forces and held this position until his retirement on July 29, 2011. Admiral Emin Murat Bilgel , who was Yiğits in 2009, was succeeded as Supreme Commander of the Navy Successor as Commander in Chief of the Fleet Command.
