Command of the Allied Naval Forces Southern Europe

The command of the Allied Naval Forces Southern Europe ( Commander Naval Forces Southern Europe , COMNAVSOUTH) is a military department of NATO .

history

It emerged as an independent headquarters on June 4, 1967 from the dissolution of the Allied Forces Mediterranean headquarters , a NATO structure that was in command of maritime operations in the Mediterranean and Black Seas . The Allied Naval Forces Southern Europe were part of the Allied Forces South Europe from 1951 to 2004 .

Today the Command Component Maritime Naples (CC Mar) is subordinate to the Allied Joint Force Command Naples . The headquarters was established on a British military base in Malta . Dom Mintoff was elected Prime Minister of Malta in 1971. In the stationing agreement of March 1972, Warsaw Pact ships were allowed to use Maltese ports. As a result, the headquarters were moved to Nisida in late 1974 .
