Assault boats are light, mostly open boats with an outboard motor . They are of Heeres- or engineering units for quick crossing of inland waters, such as the formation of bridgeheads , used or for the placement of commandos. Even in civil organizations, such as THW or fire brigade , comparable boats are often referred to as assault boats, although they serve completely different purposes there.

Assault boats are used in very different sizes and designs, depending on their intended use. Small assault boats usually offer space for an infantry squad with their personal equipment.

Example of the technical data of a modern pioneer assault boat of the Austrian Armed Forces:

  • Length: 6.6 m
  • Width: 2.1 m
  • Weight: 400 kg
  • Propulsion: 2 × 60 HP outboard motors
  • Payload: 8 people with equipment (incl. 2 man boat crew)

For rapid deployment even under enemy threat, the crew should be able to launch the assault boats into the water without any further aids, which is why they are usually made of light materials such as wood, light metal or plastic. Larger boats, which are also suitable for transporting heavier equipment, can no longer be used by hand, but are launched directly into the water by trucks or trailers, the transitions to landing craft are fluid here.
