Zenzile is a French electronic, dub and post-punk band that was founded in 1995 in Angers . The name Zenzile goes back to the name of a South African poet who campaigned against apartheid . Zenzile is also one of Miriam Makeba's many first names .
The band's musical style is very independent. Zenzile are known for developing dub so much by incorporating a lot of different styles of music. Zenzile synthesized influences from electronic music, hip-hop , ambient , electro, etc. Sometimes the dub is only audible in traces, but is always a structural and ideal frame of reference under the compositions and arrangements of Zenzile. With the 2009 album Pawn Shop , Zenzile turned strongly towards post-punk - a style that emerged in the late 1970s as a mixture of punk , funk , disco and dub . Zenzile's sound is characterized by the use of the Korg MS-10 vintage synthesizer , which was produced in the 1970s.
The band started as an instrumental dub band. The band's role models are The Clash , LKJ, The Ruts , Lee Perry , Adrian Sherwood & On-U Sound , Grace Jones , Rhythm & Sound feat. Tikiman et al. a. Zenzile is on friendly terms with the following bands: Bad Brains , High Tone , Sweet Back, AtraA.
Jamika Ajalon , who contributes vocals and lyrics to Zenzile, has been with Zenzile since 1999, first as a guest singer, later as a permanent member. In addition to her work at Zenzile, Jamika is a filmmaker, visual artist and writer who deals in her works with the interferences of discrimination against people on the basis of their skin color, origin, gender and sexual orientation. Jamika Ajalon brings this content into her work at Zenzile.
In November 2005, Zenzile toured with High Tone , a well-known French dub band. The following year, the album with High Tone called Zentone was released .
With the album Metà Metà , released in 2006 under the name Zenzile Sound System , Zenzile developed a more electronic sound under the influence of Maurizio , The Cinematic Orchestra , Amon Tobin and musicians from the Ninja Tune label . In 2007, Zenzile's album Living in Monochrome was released . The band's style moved towards post-punk through the use of more complex guitar parts.
The album Electric Soul is expected to be released in September 2012. On this album, besides Jamika Ajalon , Mcanuff and Jey Ree take on essential vocal parts, which means that Zenzile's sound tends a little towards reggae .
