Paul St. Hilaire (* in Grand Bay , Saint Patrick , Dominica ) is a Dominican reggae singer, musician and label owner who is also known under the pseudonym Tikiman .

Life

St. Hilaire grew up in Dominica in the 1970s. Together with Ras Donovan he founded the band Radication Squad , in which St. Hilaire played the lead guitar and Donovan the bass guitar. Donovan moved to Berlin in 1988.

St. Hilaire was later active in changing bands. Among other things, he was lead guitarist and singer with Livin 'Spirits , with whom he recorded two albums and also toured internationally. In the early 1990s, St. Hilaire also moved to Germany after he was invited to Hanover by the guitarist of a befriended band. He later settled in Berlin.

From the mid-1990s, Paul St. Hilaire became known outside of the reggae scene through his collaboration with the Berlin techno musicians Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus . As a tikiman , he contributed the vocals for numerous projects of the two musicians, including several dub techno records as Rhythm & Sound or for the vocal house releases as Round Three to Round Five on Main Street Records . The five releases as Rhythm & Sound were combined in 1998 in the album Showcase .

In addition, St. Hilaire worked with artists such as Modeselektor , The Bug , Tarwater , Mikkel Metal , Deadbeat and René Löwe . With Löwe he has also appeared as Paul St. Hilaire w / Scion since 1999 and presents live Scion versions of the pieces of music created together with Rhythm & Sound.

After legal disputes with another name owner, he had to give up his pseudonym in 2003 and has since published under his real name. Some of the earlier releases have been re-released under the new name.

In 2000 he founded his own label False Tuned as a platform for the “reggae of tomorrow”. His two solo albums Unspecified (2003) and Adsom - A Divine State Of Mind (2006) were released on his label .
