Jamika Ajalon

Jamika Ajalon Cothrine (* 1968 in Saint Louis , Missouri ) is an American singer and lyricist for the band Zenzile , artist , poet and director .

Life

Jamika Ajalon trained as a journalist at the University of Missouri in Columbia between 1986 and 1989 and then studied film and video at Columbia College until 1993. She completed a master's degree in Media, Communications and Culture at Goldsmith University in London in 1995 and supplemented her horizons in 1997 with the UK New Directors workshop at the Women's Audio Visual Education Scheme in Great Britain. She lives in London and Paris .

Jamika Ajalon's poems have been published in various anthologies.

Her short films were shown at film festivals in Europe and the USA and on the British television station Channel 4.

Furthermore she developed interdisciplinary film and video works, which she u. a. performed in Austria and Great Britain.

She can be seen as an actress in the film Go Fish (1994) directed by Rose Troche .

As a musician, she works permanently with the band Zenzile . Since the jointly released album "5 + 1 Zenzile meets Jamika" she is considered the sixth member of the band. She performed at various festivals ( Festival International de Jazz de Montréal , at the South by South West Festival in Austin) and in various places such as New York, London (Cargo), Paris (La Cigale), in Austria and in Africa, among others . a. together with the Urban Poets , with the Tony Allen Band and with The Shrine . Under the name Jamika and the Bowdel Band , she works musically with Nicolas Gallard (drums), Nicolas Meslien, Laurent Baron, Frank Bergere, Jean-Christophe Wauthier and Vincent Erdeven ( Zenzile ).

As an artist, she took part in the fashion photography workshop of the Institute for Foreign Relations in 2008. V. in Dakar, Prêt-à-pARTager . In 2010 she took part in IMBUZI , the workshop of the Institute for Foreign Relations e. V. in Cape Town, and in 2011 at IN THE SEAMS , the workshop of the Institute for Foreign Relations e. V. in Johannesburg.

In her artistic works, Jamika Ajalon deals with the interplay of discrimination based on skin color, origin, gender and sexual orientation. She describes the positions and roles of Women of Color in society and analyzes the images with which these roles are communicated in mass media and film. Jamika Ajalon brings this content into her work at Zenzile .
