Özden Örnek

Özden Örnek (born February 2, 1943 in İzmit , Turkey ; † April 29, 2018 , İstanbul , Turkey) was a Turkish admiral who last held the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Navy ( Türk Deniz Kuvetleri ) from 2003 to 2005 .

Life

After attending elementary and secondary schools in İzmit, he first entered the naval cadet institute ( Deniz Lisesi ) in 1957 and then graduated from the naval school ( Deniz Harp Okulu ), which he graduated in 1962 as a sub-lieutenant at sea. He then found use as an officer in various naval units and warships, such as between 1964 and 1967 as a division officer on a destroyer . He then completed training in the USA between 1967 and 1969 and was an officer auditor at the Naval Academy ( Deniz Harp Akademisi ) in 1975 .

After he was in command of the destroyer TCG Adatepe (D-353) from 1980 to 1981 , he attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1982 and was a staff officer in the operations department of the Navy's High Command until 1984 . After a subsequent employment from 1984 to 1986 as a naval attaché at the embassy in the USA, he was first commodore of the 1st assault boat flotilla from 1986 to 1987 and then until 1988 commodore of the 2nd destroyer flotilla.

On August 30, 1988, he was promoted to Flotilla Admiral and appointed deputy head of the planning and organization department in the Navy High Command. Subsequently, between 1989 and 1990 he was Chief of Staff of the Fleet Command and then from 1990 to 1992 an employee of the Allied Naval Forces Southern Europe (NAVSOUTH) of NATO in Nisida .

After his promotion to Rear Admiral , Örnek was first head of the operations department and then the logistics department in the Navy High Command in 1992, before he was commander of the assault boat associations between 1994 and 1995 and then chief of staff of the naval command from 1995 to 1996.

On August 30, 1996, he was promoted to Vice Admiral and as such was first head of the control and evaluation department in the High Command of the Navy and then between 1997 and 1999 Chief of Naval Staff. After finishing this activity he was from August 1999 to 2001 Commander-in-Chief of the Naval Command North ( Kuzey Deniz Saha Komutanlığı ) in Istanbul , which is responsible for the Marmara Sea , Black Sea , Bosporus and Dardanelles , among other things .

In August 2001 he was promoted to admiral and at the same time appointed commander-in-chief of the naval command ( Donanma Komutanlığı ) at the Gölcük naval base , which includes mine-laying , submarine , assault craft, anti-mine vehicles , logistics support and naval aviation associations .

Most recently, Admiral Örnek was appointed as the successor to Admiral Bülent Alpkaya on August 30, 2003, Supreme Commander of the Navy. He held this position until his retirement on August 26, 2005 and his subsequent replacement by Admiral Yener Karahanoğlu , who had become his successor as Commander in Chief of the Fleet Command in 2003.
