Gilutongan Island is an island in the Province of Cebu in the Philippines . It is located about 12 km off the east coast of the island of Mactan and 4 km south of the island of Olango , in the waters of the Danajon Bank . A sea area between the Camotes Sea and the Strait of Cebu , northwest of Bohol Island . The island has an area of approximately 11.26 hectares and is administered by the municipality of Cordova . In the 2007 census, exactly 1256 inhabitants were registered. The Barangay Gilutongan is located on the island. The island is also known regionally under the name Hilutangan.
The island has a shape similar to a shark tooth. The island , which is about 630 meters long and 820 meters wide, is preceded by numerous coral reefs and seagrass beds, some of which are protected by the 15 hectare Gilutongan Marine Sanctuary. It was initiated in 1991 to 11 hectares and later expanded to 15 hectares and is a joint project of USAID , the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the local government. The protected areas are on the northwest side of the island. Five species of seagrass were counted. The coral reefs adjoin the seagrass meadows, which begin very shallowly and drop in inclines of 20 to 80 degrees into the Hilutungan Channel.
The topography of the island is very flat with no major elevations. There is a denser vegetation only on the elongated northwestern side of the island. There is a ferry connection to the island from the port in Cordova, the journey takes about 60 minutes.
