Richard Scott Cohen (born October 16, 1960 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American music director , composer , arranger , music teacher , trombonist and professor.

Act

Cohen graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor's degree in Spanish and music education in 1984 . There he became a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Association and received three Fulbright scholarships for Spain . He then studied conducting at Northwestern University and completed his postgraduate studies in 1988 with a Master of Music and a doctorate in musicology.

He has been Professor of Music at Ferris State University (FSU) since 2002 and directs the instrumental ensemble there, the FSU Symphony Orchestra, the FSU West Central Concert Band, the FSU Community Summer Band and the FSU West Central Chamber Orchestra.

Cohen is a member of the board of directors of the International Society for the Research and Promotion of Brass Music (IGEB) and the editorial board of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE). He is a member of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), the Association of Concert Bands (ACB), the National Bandmasters Association (NBA), the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA), and the North American-Catalan Society (NACS).

honors and awards

Richard Scott Cohen received the IGEB Thelen Prize in 2000 for his essay The Musical Society Community Bands of Valencia, Spain. A Global Study of Their Administration, Instrumentation, Repertoire and Performance Activities . The MSBOA awarded him a lifetime honorary membership in 2006.
