Karita Mattila

Karita Mattila (born September 5, 1960 in Somero , Finland ) is a Finnish opera singer ( soprano ).

Live and act

She graduated from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and continued her studies first in Finland with Liisa Linko-Malmio and then in London with Vera Rozsa . In 1983 she won the Cardiff Singer of the World singing competition .

Mattila made her debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in 1986 as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte by WA Mozart . Since then she has performed with renowned orchestras and well-known conductors such as Claudio Abbado , James Levine and Zubin Mehta . She has taken on roles at leading opera houses around the world, such as the Royal Opera House , London, the Vienna State Opera , the La Scala in Milan or at the operas in Paris, Hamburg, Salzburg, Chicago and the Metropolitan Opera , New York. Her roles include Elisabeth in Verdi's Don Carlos , Elsa in Wagner's Lohengrin and the title role in "Salome" by Richard Strauss.

She has won a number of awards, including a Grammy in 1998 . In 2004, a recording of the opera Jenufa , in which she participated, was honored with a Grammy for the best opera recording. Musical America voted her Musician of the Year in 2005.

In 2005 she sang Amelia in Un ballo in maschera in London , and in autumn 2006 she made her role debut as Tosca in Helsinki. In 2007 and 2008 she had success as Jenufa at the MET and in Washington, sang Leonore in London, Manon Lescaut at the MET and the piece Mirage composed for her by Kaija Saariaho . In 2009 she sang Tatjana at the MET and Leonore at the Teatre Liceu in Barcelona. In autumn 2009 she opened the new 2009/10 season of the MET New York with great success with a new production of Tosca, one of her star roles, directed by Luc Bondy . In 2010 she sang Tosca at the side of Jonas Kaufmann at the Munich Opera Festival.
