Matthew Polenzani

Matthew Polenzani (born August 23, 1968 in Evanston, Illinois ) is an American opera singer with a tenor voice . His international work has taken him to opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Royal Opera House London, the Bavarian State Opera Munich, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Vienna State Opera in major roles in the lyric tenor subject . As a lieder singer, he works with the pianist Julius Drake .

biography

Training and first appearances

Polenzani initially studied at Eastern Illinois University, initially with the aim of becoming a choir director and music teacher. After a master class with the bass-baritone Alan Held , he decided to study singing at the Yale School of Music, where he obtained his master's degree in 1994. He then took part in the young talent program of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York in 1997 , where he has since played numerous major roles. Beginning with an engagement at the Opéra National de Bordeaux in 1998, he also made guest appearances at other opera houses in Europe.

Development as an opera singer

Most of the roles played by Polenzani can be assigned to the lyric tenor vocal subject . He was best known as a Mozart interpreter and for roles in the Italian Belcanto subject and related French roles. Only more recently, starting in 2019 as Don José in Carmen , has he also appeared as a youthful hero tenor .
