Susanne Mertens is happily married to her husband Klaus. They have a son named Jonas whom they love more than anything. However, there were increasing marital problems between Susanne and Klaus when Susanne decided to return to her old job as a zoo veterinarian . In addition, Susanne has to realize that her husband is cheating on her with a work colleague. Shortly thereafter, she met the divorced pediatrician Dr. Christoph Lentz, who lives alone with his daughter Rebecca.

Relation to the series

Due to the high audience rating, a series of the same name was commissioned after this television film , which in the first season reworks, embellishes, supplements, partially changes the content of the television film, and continues the plot in the other seasons. Most roles, including Susanne and Christoph, have been reassigned. So Dr. Susanne Mertens played in the series by Elisabeth Lanz , while Dr. Christoph Lentz is portrayed by Sven Martinek . Susanne's son Jonas Mertens, however, is played in both the film and the series by Ludwig Zimmeck . This is exactly what the actor Horst Günter Marx does, who plays Susanne's (ex) husband and Jonas' father Klaus Mertens in both the film and the series. The actor Gunter Schoß played Susanne's predecessor or superior, the zoo veterinarian Dr. Vogel and takes over the leading role from Susanne's father, Professor Georg Baumgart, in the series.
