A catarrh (also catarrhal inflammation or catarrhus ; v. Ancient Greek καταρρεῖν katarrhein , German `` flow down '' ) is an inflammation of the mucous membrane , often of the respiratory organs , which is associated with an increased secretion of watery or slimy secretions . Other inflammations of the mucous membranes were often referred to as catarrh in the past, for example "uterine catarrh" when the lining of the uterus is inflamed.

Colloquially, a catarrh (having a catarrh) is usually another name for a cold in the form of inflammation of the upper respiratory tract , i.e. sinusitis ( frontal sinusitis is also referred to here as "frontal sinus catarrh"), rhinitis , pharyngitis and laryngitis , which are often also associated with bronchitis .

The term hangover with excessive alcohol consumption arose from a corruption of the word .
