Parish Church Bad Gleichenberg
The Roman Catholic parish church Bad Gleichenberg stands on a hill in the center of the municipality Bad Gleichenberg in Styria . The parish church of St. Matthias is part of the Feldbach dean's office in the Graz-Seckau diocese . The church building is a listed building .
history
Matthias Constantin Capello von Wickenburg donated the building of a church in 1841 as part of the development of Gleichenberg into a health resort. The church was consecrated on June 29, 1845. In 1888 the church was handed over to the Franciscans with the Franciscan Hospice . In 1940 the church was elevated to a parish church as a branch of the Trautmannsdorf parish church. The choir expansion took place from 1960 to 1962.
architecture
The church is a simple hall with a coffered ceiling and a retracted and later expanded choir. A sacristy with two oratorios was added to the north. The historicized gable front has a round window and carries a roof turret. At the end of the choir is a sgraffito St. Francis from 1961. The cast-iron entrance door with the representation of the twelve apostles, based on a design by the sculptor Max Meixner from Graz, was cast in the foundry near Mariazell in 1844. The glass windows were created by the painter Franz Weiss (1980). Under the church is the crypt of the Wickenburg and Bruxelles families.
Furnishing
The high altar shows the remarkable altar sheet of the founder with his family in adoration of the Mother of God and the namesake Matthias, Emmerenzia and Johannes the Baptist, painted by Joseph Tunner (1844). He bears the Gothic side figures Katharina and Barbara (around 1420). On the right side altar is a Gothic figure of John from the 2nd quarter of the 15th century. The figures of Heinrich and Elisabeth from the 2nd half of the 19th century are in wall niches. The Stations of the Cross after Führich are from the 2nd half of the 19th century.
