history

In 1244, Frederick the Arguable loaned Haldenrain Castle to the Styrian clerk Witigo . In the 15th century the rule came to the Lords of Stubenberg. In 1480/90 the castle was occupied by the Hungarians. The Barons von Ratmannstorff and later the Counts Althann followed . In the 17th century most of the medieval fortifications were demolished and a new castle was built in their place. Around 1700 Halbenrain suffered again from the Hungarian invasions.

From 1724 the castle was owned by the Stürgkh counts . After a fire in 1767, the castle was largely renovated and the last medieval fortifications were demolished. The castle has been owned by the State of Styria since 1980. After another extensive renovation, an agricultural housekeeping school for girls was set up in the building.

architecture

A three-story, somewhat irregular square surrounds an approximately square inner courtyard. The facades, the courtyard and the garden side were designed in the second half of the 18th century.
