Stürgkh (noble family)
Stürgkh (also knights, barons, counts of Stürgkh or Stürckh (von Blankenwerth) , also the Stürckhen ) is the name of an Austrian noble family that originally came from Donaustauf in Bavaria , later moved to Styria and was accepted into the Styrian knighthood in 1532 . In 1638 the noble family was elevated to the baron status , 1715 to the count status, and 1721 to the imperial count status. Since 1720 the Stürgkh were enfeoffed with the court office of the Obersterbland Vorschneider in Carinthia , in 1723 they also received the indigenous state in Hungary as a magnate .

Origin and possessions
The von Stürgkh family comes from the village (since 1496 Markt) Donaustauf in the Regensburg district in the Upper Palatinate (in the Free State of Bavaria ), where the family with Konrad Stürgkh first appeared in a document in 1333.
Six generations later, Georg Stürgkh († 1547), who had become a wealthy merchant in Graz, received a letter of arms from Emperor Maximilian I on March 20, 1518 , acquired Plankenwarth Castle in 1532 , called himself Stürgkh auf Plankenwarth and became a knight in the same year recorded. Four generations later, Johann Christoph Stürgkh on Plankenwarth († March 8, 1685 in Graz ) was raised to hereditary baron status on May 19, 1638 with the title of Baron zu Plankenwarth . His son, Baron Georg Christoph , was raised to hereditary count on June 5, 1715 , on July 15, 1720 with the office of Obersterbland-Vorneider in Carinthia , on November 4, 1721 with the title of Count von Stürgkh, Freiherr zu Plankenwarth and Vasoldenberg were raised to the status of hereditary imperial count and at the same time awarded him the palatinate ( dignity of the palatine ) in primogeniture .
The family owned, among others, Palais Stürgkh , Burg Plankenwarth, Schloss Pranckh (also Schloss Prankh ), Schloss Vasoldsberg , Burg Klöch , Schloss Halbenrain , Maßenburg , Afling im Kainachtal with the Stürgkhhof (so-called Storchenschlössel ).
Palais Stürgkh on the main square in Graz was owned by the family from 1521 to 1798. Georg Stürgkh was based in Graz and worked as a trader. He inherited the house at Herrengasse 17 from Thomas Oedenleich in 1521. Plankenwarth Castle or Plankenwarth Castle is a hilltop castle in Sankt Oswald bei Plankenwarth (Styria) that has been converted into a castle and was owned by the family from 1532 to 1699 and from 1791 to 1826 . Pranckh Castle (also Prankh Castle) is located in the village of Prankh near Sankt Marein in Styria and was inherited by Ludwig Stürgkh von Plankenwarth in 1551. His sons sold it in 1578. Vasoldsberg Castle in the Graz-Umgebung district was passed on to her husband, Johann Stürgkh Freiherr zu Plankenwart († 1685) by Maximiliana Freiin zu Herberstein, Neuberg and Gutenhag (* 1624 in Graz) in 1643 , but it soon came about (1664 ?) again in other hands. Castle Klöch , today a castle ruin, is located in the district of southeast Styria , about nine kilometers north of Bad Radkersburg , and was owned by the family from 1724 to 1996. Halbenrain Castle in the market town of Halbenrain in Styria was owned by the family from 1724 to 1980. Kloch , Halbenrain and Freudenau (in Črnci, dt. Umbrella village , since 2006 part of the Slovenian community Apače , dt. Abstall ) were after 1718 in a Familienfideikommiss combined. Maßenburg is a castle in the south of the city of Leoben on the Maßenberg and was owned by Count Stürgkh from 1732 to 1872. It was the inheritance of Maria Theresa Countess von Wurmbrand-Stuppach († 1740), wife of Georg Christof Graf von Stürgkh († † 1739). Today the property is in ruins. Afling in the Kainachtal included the Stürgkhhof and is now a locality and Rotte. Today it lies in the municipal areas of Bärnbach and Kainach near Voitsberg in the Voitsberg district in western Styria .

Ennobling and dynastic marriages

Blazon : The family coat of arms was awarded in 1518 and, according to Johann Siebmacher's coat of arms book, is divided into black and gold, in it a left-facing gold-black split stork with open wings, red stand and red beak, in which he has a gold ring with a turquoise on a green three-mountain holds. The crowned helmet with a black and gold cover carries the stork with the ring.
