Castle ruin Klöch

The castle Kloch is the ruins of a hilltop castle on a steep hill above Kloch , a village in the southeast of Austria in Styria on the border with Slovenia . Since 1997 the ruin has been used by the community for events such as castle games, etc. A viewing platform was set up at the same time.

history

The border fortress, which was important at the time, was probably built by Otto dem Wolfauer in the first half of the 14th century. Inhabited in the 17th century, it was abandoned in the 18th century and left to decay. From 1724 to 1996 the castle was owned by Count Stürgkh .

The building

The 2.50 m thick, four storey high shield wall with the mighty 8 × 8 m residential tower with an internal spiral staircase has been preserved from the castle . The viewing platform was placed on top of the residential tower (architects Walter Jartschitsch and Herwig Moosbrugger). Remains of the curtain wall , gates and rising masonry of various rooms can be made out under the rubble of the ruined walls .
