Act

At the beginning of the 1980s, the treatment of people with dementia did not attract much public attention. Gudrun Schaade was one of the first to deal with the promotion and activation of these people. She is considered a pioneer for occupational therapists in the field of dementia and developed a support concept for the treatment of people with dementia. She presented this concept in 1997 at the 1st Alzheimer's Congress in Stuttgart. It uses well-known neurological therapy concepts such as B. the Bobath concept or the Affolter model , SI (sensory integration) and basal stimulation and adapts them to the possibilities of the patient. Important resources are a sense of rhythm in the sense of simple, repetitive movement sequences such as B. swaying. Here the vestibular system is promoted. Hand coordination is achieved by clapping. The hands in the treatment of dementia play an important role, as they are usually closed in the end stage and contractures occur. The long-term memory and the body self-awareness must be promoted. Resources should be promoted and security conveyed in a playful way. For this purpose, Schaade developed their “Schaade therapy folders”, the use of which should not only address cognitive resources, but also offer tactile - kinaesthetic and proprioceptive stimuli. Since 2005, Gudrun Schaade has also been increasingly concerned with Korsakov's syndrome , an irreversible form of brain damage caused by alcohol.
