Vasoldsberg Castle is located in the Vasoldsberg municipality in the Graz-Umgebung political district in Eastern Styria in Austria . The castle is under monument protection ( list entry ).

location

The castle is located on a wooded ridge between the Ferbersbach and the Stiefenbach near the village of Vasoldsberg.

history

The complex was built at the beginning of the 13th century, its early history is unknown. The castle probably had a protective function for the road and for the Graz hill country. Ulrich von Vasoldsperge is documented as the first owner in 1252, who was part of the retinue of Duke Leopold VI. belonged to. Later owners were until the 15th century the Fuller family and the bishops of Seckau , who had to hand it over to the Styrian sovereign prince. At that time, Vasoldsberg Castle only consisted of a tower with a tower house and a defensive wall with a moat. In 1467, during the riots surrounding Andreas Baumkircher , Vasoldsberg was occupied by insurgent troops. The Seckauer bishop was by Emperor Friedrich III. forced to renounce the feudal rights over Vasoldsberg Castle. The castle passed into the possession of the Habsburgs as " free property " . Administrators were entrusted with the maintenance.

In the middle of the 16th century, under the administration of Kolomann Prunner, the castle was renewed through reconstruction from 1542. At that time, forty peasants were in the rule. In 1578 the Meierhof fell victim to an arson attack, in 1592 the castle itself had to be mortgaged because the tax debts were too high. From the 17th century, several changes of ownership followed. Vasoldsberg Castle became civil property in the 19th century. Major renovations were carried out between 1911 and 1914. From 1942 Vasoldsberg Castle was owned by Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG , which set up a rest home for workers and employees as well as a model farm; since 1987 it has been privately owned by the Coutinho family.

description

In the past, Vasoldsberg Castle was surrounded by a deep moat as a defense structure. The moat that ran around the castle, spanned by two bridges and can be seen on the Vischer engraving from 1681, no longer exists. The irregular building was grouped around two courtyards. The three-storey north wing with the inner castle gate and the tower above have been preserved. To the east of the passage is the former sacristy of the castle chapel with early Gothic belt ribs that extend into what is now the first floor. The St. John's Chapel from 1450 and the sexton's room with strong pillars and ridge vaults, integrated into today's first floor, have been greatly changed. From 1911 to 1914 the castle got a new facade, the tower was raised and the clockwork of the tower clock was renovated. A bell by Martin Feltl from 1778 hangs in the tower .
