Race Around Austria
The Race Around Austria (RAA) is an annual extreme cycling event in Austria. The 2,200 km long route with about 30,000 meters of altitude leads on roads close to the border once around Austria - within its borders.
The race has always been clockwise . For some years now, the race has been organized by the club of the same name, which is based in St. Georgen im Attergau, and the start and finish are also here.
Due to its length and the altitude to be overcome, the race is considered the toughest bike race in Europe. Since 2010 it has also been a qualifying race for the Race Across America .
In 2018, the first Austrian championship in ultra cycling was held at the Race Around Austria .
Competition mode
Like the Race Across America, the race will be held in a similar way to a time trial . Slipstream driving is generally forbidden, only allowed in team competitions within your own team. The aim is to cover the given route as quickly as possible. There are no stages, time runs non-stop and breaks are at the expense of the participants. The solo drivers sleep around two to six hours a day, with the first night usually being driven through. The waiting period for the circumnavigation, including breaks, is six days, which corresponds to an average of around 15 km / h. The solo women have just under a day longer.
The streets are not closed to public traffic and the road traffic regulations must be observed by the participants. A so-called “pace car” is prescribed, a size-limited automobile that illuminates the road from behind for the cyclist at night and from which he can receive support.
Since the route varies slightly from year to year due to construction sites, the times can only be compared to a limited extent. The winning time for teams of four is usually a good three days (72 hours), while that for solo drivers is 100 hours.
history
The Race Around Austria has its roots in 1988, when the Linz cyclist Manfred Guthardt was the first to ride around Austria in nine days, starting and finishing in Bad Leonfelden. However, he drove the approximately 2,600 km long route like a stage race, drove in daylight and slept at night and made use of every possible border road. He was already driving the route clockwise.
In 2008 two extreme cyclists tried the Manfred Guthardts route. The Styrian Christoph Strasser started his solo project in Deutschlandsberg in August 2008 . Bad Ischler Gerhard Gulewicz started in Schärding in October . Christoph Strasser managed to circumnavigate Austria non-stop, Gerhard Gulewicz had to give up due to snowfall in front of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road .
The first official Race Around Austria then took place in 2009, with four individual drivers and three teams starting in Schärding . The race has been started in St. Georgen im Attergau since 2012 . The date of the event varies around August 15th.
Route variants
In 2013 the Race Around Austria was expanded to include the “Race Around Austria 1500”, and in 2014 to include the “Race Around Austria CHALLENGE”:
- The 1500 race leads directly north after the Großglockner, the route is 1,463 km long.
- The CHALLENGE leads once around Upper Austria, the route length is 553 to 560 km with around 6,500 meters of altitude.
Both will be held in parallel to the classic Race Around Austria.

Race sequence
The starts are staggered by class over several days in order to compress the finish lines of all classes in a viewer and media-friendly manner within about one day.
Extreme Women starts about 12 hours before Extreme Men. In this class, on the other hand, amateurs (with a B license) start a few hours before the professionals ("A drivers"), every 2 or 1 minutes.
Waiting times are set for several points on the way and the finish line, drivers who exceed one of these time limits must cancel independently. The race management can also remove expected waiting periods out of the race.
Driving within the place-name signs for the start and destination is neutralized, i.e. no (rolling) competitor is overtaken.
The participants receive an extensive route book with the regulations, as well as precise map excerpts and a navigation list for the entire route.
Austrian championships in ultra cycling
In 2018, the Race Around Austria was the race for the first ever Austrian championships in ultra cycling in various categories. A total of six titles were awarded by the Austrian Cycling Association:

- ↑ Tel. Info, Dr. Michael Nussbaumer, Head of the Race Around Austria Association (formerly: SVU Race Around Austria), St. Georgen im Attergau, June 21, 2018. - The reason for the direction of travel has been - since 2012 - the geographical cohesion of the field of drivers that was stretched over the last third of the route, on the loop in Tyrol and Vorarlberg. The small loop in the very west is also driven to the right.
