The reconnaissance and artillery battalion 7 (AAB7) is an association of the Austrian Armed Forces , which is stationed in the Von-der-Groeben barracks in Feldbach in Styria . The commandant of the association is Lieutenant Colonel Günter Rath. According to the plans of the 2016 army reform , the 7th Reconnaissance and Artillery Battalion will remain with the 7th Jäger Brigade, which will have the task of working closely with the Rapid Operations Command formed from the current 3rd Panzer Grenadier Brigade . The association is the eye and the sword of the 7th Jäger Brigade and an essential carrier of military intelligence gathering and reconnaissance. In addition, it provides extensive fire support for all armed forces. .

history

The battalion was set up as a mixed task force as part of the 2010 army reform. For this purpose, two training companies of the Styrian military command , which were stationed in the Hadik barracks in Fehring , were reclassified into two reconnaissance companies and, together with two self-propelled howitzer companies of the former artillery regiment 1, transferred from the Von der Groeben barracks in Feldbach to the new unit.

After the closure of the Hadik barracks in Fehring, the two reconnaissance companies also relocated to Feldbach in the Von-der-Groeben barracks, which will subsequently undergo a general renovation.

From 2012 the reconnaissance and artillery battalion 7 developed into a competence center for the digital command and control system "Combat New Generation", which was successfully tested in April 2014 in association with sister associations of other units at the Allentsteig military training area . In February 2016, the system was approved, also at the Allentsteig military training area, in the course of a two-week training and sniping session with the M109 A5Ö self-propelled howitzer .

From May 21 to June 7, 2013, parts of the battalion took part in the European Advance 2013 - EURAD13 exercise, where they practiced with 3,000 soldiers from the German Armed Forces and 1,000 other members of other European armies. The EURAD13 was also used for the certification of military units according to NATO standards, which are very important for EU and UN operations . The units of the 7th reconnaissance and artillery battalion certified were given the status "excellent" according to NATO Evaluation Level 2 (NEL2) .

Essence and effect

Battalion capabilities

The battalion can be used as part of the 7th Brigade fighters are closed used as reconnaissance and artillery battalion, but may also serve as a pure reconnaissance or artillery battalion special orders. Due to international deployment scenarios, it also has the ability to accommodate additional sensors or weapon systems from other nations and use them in conjunction with other units.

Due to its character as a mixed unit, the reconnaissance and artillery battalion 7 has the following military competencies:

  • Leadership, education and impact in the network,
  • Gathering information for military decisions,
  • Fire support for all armed forces in robust operations,
  • Force Protection to protect all soldiers.

Military intelligence gathering and reconnaissance

Spying and reconnaissance as a partial ability

The 7th reconnaissance and artillery battalion gains information through the use of different technical sensors, but also through targeted conversation reconnaissance from person to person:

  • Enlightenment of objects / people
  • Reconnaissance through the use of technical aids such as ground surveillance radar and drones
  • Conversation clarification in the form of goal-oriented conversation from person to person (human intelligence)

Cadre presence units

The 7th Reconnaissance and Artillery Battalion has forces for international operations. These cadre presence units are soldiers with a high degree of readiness who are deployed at home and abroad if necessary.

Tactical fire support

The two M-109 self-propelled howitzer batteries of the 7th reconnaissance and artillery battalion represent the artillery backbone of the 7th Jägerbrigade. With its M-109 A5Ö self-propelled howitzers, the 7th reconnaissance and artillery battalion provides extensive and precise fire support for all armed forces in robust operations. The standard structure of an Austrian self-propelled howitzer battery consists of six M109 A5Ö cannons . The A5Ö version was developed jointly by Austria and Switzerland and is similar to the American M109 version A6 Paladin . From 1998 the artillery units of the armed forces were equipped with this uniform weapon system, which then went through several combat value enhancement campaigns. The guns are equipped with the electronic navigation, orientation and straightening system NORA. The integration of the self-propelled howitzer batteries into the Combat New Generation system, for which the 7th reconnaissance and artillery battalion is primarily responsible, represents a further development step. Joint Fire Support elements combine capabilities of steep fire and close air support under a single command. They implement the demands of the combat troops and ensure target reconnaissance, location and identification as well as clarification of the effects.

Competence center for the command and weapon deployment system Combat NG

The command and weapon deployment system Combat New Generation provides a superior command with decision-relevant command information in real time and thus enables optimized and fast cross-troop deployment of weapons. For this purpose, with the help of the data from the GPS-supported troop radio system Conrad, a digital, real-time situation picture of the deployed forces is displayed, whereas in the past this had to be laboriously derived from the radio traffic of the units.

The 7th reconnaissance and artillery battalion was primarily responsible for testing this system from 2012 and also developed concepts for the introduction of the Combat New Generation command system in other units of the armed forces. Important milestones in this were its testing during an exercise at the Allentsteig military training area in April 2014, in which reconnaissance and artillery units from outside the battalion also took part, as well as the acceptance of the system during a sniper shoot with the M109 self-propelled howitzers in February 2016.

An important task for the reconnaissance and artillery battalion 7 is the regular provision of information about the project progress for officers and soldiers in charge of the Ministry of Defense, the armed forces command, the staff of the 7th Jäger Brigade and the subordinate battalions.
