The Jägerbataillon 24 is a high mountain mobile infantry unit of the Austrian Armed Forces .

General

On July 15, 1975, a battalion named Jägerbataillon 24 (JgB 24) was set up in Lienz for the first time . In 1979, with the establishment of the Landwehr Trunk Regiment 64 (LWSR 64), the JgB 24 became a militia unit. In 1994 the LWSR 64 became the Lienz Jägerregiment (JgR L) in the course of a new army division. The structural adjustment in 1999 finally brought out the name JgB 24 again. Due to its character as a mountain troop, the battalion was placed under the 6th Jägerbrigade , the "mountain brigade" of the Austrian Armed Forces . In the course of the army reform in 2016 , this higher-level brigade was transferred to the Mountain Combat Command and subsequently to the 6th Mountain Brigade, with the 24th Jäger Battalion remaining in its unit.

Today JgB 24 owns the headquarters company (StbKp) and the combat support company (KUKp) in the Haspinger barracks in Lienz, the 1st Jägerkompanie (1st JgKp) in the Franz Joseph barracks in Lienz and the 2nd Jäger company in the Winterstell barracks in St. Johann iT .

Assignments and training

Special training and equipment enable the battalion to cover the entire range of operations of an infantry battalion, especially in high mountains , but also in built-up areas under difficult weather and terrain conditions. One of the battalion's core tasks is the training of those doing basic military service. As with similar associations, the six-month basic military service is divided into three sections of basic training (BA) and serves to establish the field usability for assigned operational tasks. BA 1 serves to learn the basic knowledge in theory and practice in order to ensure survivability in an emergency. The focus of BA 2 and BA 3 is mountain training. Taking into account the particularities of mountain training , the battalion publishes a quarterly so-called troop newspaper to inform conscripts in the territorial sphere of influence.

UN and NATO missions are regularly supported by members of the battalion. For example, the 1st company of the now defunct Austrian battalion of the UNDOF mission with the highest UN base at Mount Hermon on the Golan Heights between Israel and Syria was manned by 24s several times in a row. Other current missions of the 24 mountain troops: UNIFIL Lebanon, KFOR Kosovo, EUFOR Althea Bosnia and Herzegovina and Resolute Support Mission Afghanistan.

Tradition and partnership

The 1st and 2nd regiments of the Tyrolean Kaiserjäger were assigned to the Jägerbataillon 24 as a traditional troop body. The assignment of traditional troop bodies is a specifically Austrian custom and is intended to keep timeless military virtues in mind. Every year on April 17th, the tragic events surrounding the demolition of the Austrian base on the summit of Col di Lana in 1916 are commemorated in the form of a military celebration.

The Jägerbataillon 24 and its predecessor organizations were always positively integrated in all areas of society in the context of their territorial sphere of activity. The then district captain of the administrative district of Lienz, Othmar Doblander, initiated a partnership between the Jägerbataillon 24 (then Landwehr Tribe Regiment 64) with all 33 communities in East Tyrol . On the occasion of the partnership celebration on October 30, 1982 on the main square in Lienz, an honorary horn was also given to the then commander of the 64th Landwehr Trunk Regiment, Brigadier i. R. Ambros Eigenler presented.

The battalion maintains a training cooperation with the mountain hunter battalion 231 of the German Armed Forces ( Bad Reichenhall ), as well as cooperation programs with the armed forces of the Republic of Montenegro and the mountain troops of the Republic of Italy (Alpini Bataillon Bassano / 6th Alpini Regiment in Bruneck ).
