Franz Joseph Barracks

The Franz-Joseph-Kaserne Lienz is a barracks of the Austrian Armed Forces in the city of Lienz in East Tyrol , where parts of the Jäger Battalion 24 are stationed. The barracks building named after Emperor Franz Joseph I is a listed building .

history

The building was used from 1921 to 1936 by the Agricultural College and from 1950 to 1960 by the Bundesgymnasium and Bundesrealgymnasium .

In 2014, then Defense Minister Gerald Klug announced the closure of the barracks. The closure should have taken place as part of a reform or austerity program, which would have affected twelve other barracks of the Federal Army. In 2016, however, the closure plans were abandoned again due to the security situation in Europe. The refugee crisis and the associated migration flows were indirectly cited as the reason.

Currently, the high-mountain maneuverable cadre presence unit forces of the 1st Jäger Company of Jägerbataillon 24 use this location.

architecture

The elongated, four-storey building with a raised, three-part central projection on the long sides was built between 1910 and 1911. On the north side, cornered, north-facing side wings were added, the entrance portal with curved gable and coat of arms of Emperor Franz Joseph I is pilaster-framed. The facade decoration was grooved on the ground floor, the upper floors were divided vertically by decorative panels. The main building has an E-shaped floor plan. The appearance of the outbuildings matches the main building.
