Former municipalities in the Lienz district

In the district of Lienz, there was amalgamation of communities for the first time in 1850/52, when numerous groups in the Pustertal were united to form the community of Assling , Untergaimberg and Obergaimberg to form the community of Gaimberg , and Stribach and Göriach to form the community of Göriach-Stribach.

The end of the First World War marked a massive cut in the administrative structure of the Lienz district, as a result of which East Tyrol had to cede the communities of Innichberg , Innichen , Sexten , Vierschach , Wahlen and Winnebach to Italy through the peace treaty of St. Germain . As a result, the judicial district of Sillian was dissolved and the communities remaining in East Tyrol were added to the judicial district of Lienz.

The most extensive change in the structure of the community came about when the National Socialists came to power, with numerous East Tyrolean communities being amalgamated in 1939. In the course of this restructuring, 40 previously independent municipalities were merged into just 15 municipalities. After the end of the Second World War, this measure was partially reversed. In this way, Ausservillgraten and Innervillgraten regained their independence, Schlaiten was removed from Ainet and Abfaltersbach and Tessenberg also regained their independence from Strassen. Panzendorf was also removed from Sillian and the municipality of Grafendorf dissolved again, with the result that the districts of Gaimberg and Thurn regained their independence. The Iselsberg-Stronach community was again detached from Döslach. The communities of Amlach and Lavant, which had belonged to Tristach from 1939, also became independent again.

The last change came in 1974 when Tessenberg and Panzendorf were combined to form the Heinfels community.
