Göncöl Foundation
The Göncöl Foundation (Hungarian: Göncöl Alapítvány ) is a Hungarian environmental protection organization with headquarters in the Göncöl House (Hungarian: Göncöl Ház ) in Vác , Hungary . The foundation was established in its current form in 1989. Göncöl is politically and denominationally independent and not for profit. The purpose of the Göncöl foundation is the care and preservation of natural resources and the environment, as well as advising and educating Hungarian society on environmental protection issues. It also forms the core of the Göncöl Alliance , an association of several Hungarian NGOs , experts and volunteers who are active in environmental protection with common concerns . The foundation is a member of international organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources ( IUCN for short ). The Göncöl House is also the seat of the Hungarian National Committee of IUCN. In 1993 the work of the foundation was honored with the nature conservation prize "Pro Natura" of the Republic of Hungary.
The main focus of the Göncöl Foundation's work is the institute for regional studies, the editorial and publishing office, the working group for education in environmental protection and sustainability, the working group for public consultation as well as the gallery and the visitor center. The scientific institute, the education center with library and exhibition room as well as the secretariat are in the Göncöl house in Vác. A field center that is used for excursions, camps and volunteer work is located in Pénzesgyőr ( Bakony Mountains ). The editorial office is in Budapest and, together with the zoological and botanical garden in Budapest, publishes two monthly journals on nature and animal welfare, which are distributed nationwide in Hungary. The magazine Vadon (German: Wildnis) is aimed primarily at adults and Süni (German: Igel) at children and young people. The gallery is located in the old water tower on Margaret Island (Budapest) , one of the landmarks of the island.
After the fall of the Wall, Göncöl played a significant role in the development of national environmental protection policy and was, among other things, significantly involved in the preparation and formulation of the Hungarian environmental protection law.
