Theodor Christian Raumer

Theodor Christian Raumer (born November 1, 1644 in Dessau , † November 23, 1707 in Zerbst ) was a German professor of theology , history , oriental studies and oriental languages at the Francisceum Zerbst and long-time rector of this institution.

Live and act

The son of the Dessau court preacher and superintendent Georg Raumer (1610–1691) and Dorothea Elisabeth von Bergen (1619–1702) first attended the regular school in his hometown. In 1660 his father sent him to the Protestant grammar school illustre in Zerbst, where he laid the basis for his later studies. Raumer then studied theology and philosophy at the University of Leipzig with Jakob Thomasius and Johann Adam Schertzer and then switched to Gottlieb Pelargus at the Brandenburg University in Frankfurt . This was followed by courses in history and oriental languages ​​at the universities in Helmstedt, Marburg, Jena and Utrecht.

In 1670 he followed a call back to the Zerbster Gymnasium illustrious, where he was taken on as professor of theology, languages, oriental studies and history. In 1679, the Brandenburg Elector Friedrich Wilhelm offered Raumer the position of Rector at the Joachimsthalschen Gymnasium , a princely school in Berlin , which he refused in view of an expected promotion in Zerbst. Two years after Lüder Kannengießer's death, Raumer was finally appointed permanent rector of the illustrious grammar school in 1682. After numerous disputations , Raumer was awarded the degree of doctor of theology in Frankfurt an der Oder, where he took part in a jubilee celebration as a deputy . Raumer headed this academic high school until his death in 1707.

Theodor Christian Raumer was married to Rosine Sophia Hoffmann, daughter of the First Pastor Andreas Hoffmann of St. Nicolai in Zerbst , since 1674 . With her he had two daughters, who died at a young age, as well as the son Leopold Friedrich Wilhelm Raumer.
