The Fehringer Tabor was a fortification ( Tabor ) built in the East Styrian town of Fehring in the second half of the 15th century . This was built around the church to protect the population in times of war. Remnants of this tabor have been preserved to this day.

Historical background

The second half of the 15th century went down in the history of Styria as a "time of land plagues". The life of the population was threatened not only by the appearance of locusts and the plague , but also and above all by the spreading feuds and the invasions of Hungarians and Turks. The landlords and the sovereign were often unable or unwilling to fulfill the obligation to protect their subjects , which is why they were usually forced to take care of their own protection.

History of the Fehringer Tabor

For reasons of defense, a tabor or Gadenkirchhof was built in the Fehring market around the parish church of St. Joseph in the second half of the 15th century . It consisted of a closed row of supply houses arranged in an irregular hexagon. These storage houses consisted of a cellar and a storage level above and were protected on the south side by a weir ditch and the waste from the terrace on which the church stood. On the outer wall they each had keyhole-shaped loopholes .

After the Heiducken invaded Styria in 1605 , the Fehringer Tabor was reinforced by corner bastions and a gate fitted with a drawbridge . This drawbridge gate, which bears the year 1615, still exists today. Two of the bastions in the north and east and a round tower have also been preserved. The Gaden themselves have been demolished since the 18th century, when the Tabor finally lost its defensive function, or, as for example on the eastern flank of the Tabor, converted into residential buildings. The last remaining gaden on the south side was only removed in 1972.
