Marian monogram

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Marian monogram is also known as the Mother of God monogram and consists of a letter formation that is intended to designate the name of the Mother of God Mary . The monograms are on coats of arms , on church buildings , in house inscriptions , on altars , on ceiling frescoes , on crosses and wayside shrines , on Marian columns , on organ galleries and choir rooms , in glass windows , on icons , on jewelry . It is still used in art , on objets d'art as accessories, and in writing. The distinguishing letter is M , it can also be combined with additional letters or other monograms (such as M and PX ) and decorated with decorations .

meaning

Just as IHS stands for Christ, IXXI stands for Mary, which actually consists of the letters M and A written one inside the other. The pious monogram is called Auspice Maria , "under the protection of Mary", sometimes incorrectly interpreted as "Ave Maria". In the 17th century, the Jesuits are said to have cast finger rings with the Marian sign IXXI. The variant IXXR can also be seen. Special forms were also used in the times of the Counter Reformation through the mediation of the Jesuits.

Marian monograms on icons

The Marian monogram on icons - the origin of which is the Byzantine Mother of God monogram - is located on Marian icons predominantly in the upper left and right corner of a Marian icon and is represented by the Cyrillic, Byzantine, Greek or South Slavic letters MHP (left) and ФУ (right) . The lettering of icons went its own way in Russia from the 15th century. “The Russian azbukovnik interpretation, however, should surprise not a few icon connoisseurs today. It reads: Мария - Рода Сына - Фарисеева - Учителя "
