Adolf Ruhmann was born in 1832 as the son of the silversmith Josef Ruhmann. He initially worked in the Vienna State Printing Office , acted on it with kerosene lamps and opened a rag wholesale and -Detailhandel for the former paper generation factories. He also supplied the Guggenbach paper factory near Peggau in Styria. A wooden loop had been erected there in 1846, which was mechanized in 1853. The nearby Sommer machine paper mill was supplied with their wood pulp and rags from Adolf Ruhmann. Due to the increasing demand for raw materials for paper production, Adolf Ruhmann founded his first paper company in Guggenbach in 1853 under the name "Adolf Ruhmann - paper factory". In 1876 he bought the larger machine paper factory from Sommer in Guggenbach, which had just become insolvent. With these factories, he successfully implemented his vision of producing paper only from wood and without rags. To this end, he acquired the exclusive rights for a patent in this regard from the inventor Friedrich Gottlieb Keller for Austria-Hungary and successfully implemented the invention. His company gained a lot of recognition with the new low-cost paper and numerous awards such as 1879 at the world exhibition in Sydney or 1880 at trade shows in Vienna and Graz. Even before 1900 the Ruhmann company was one of the most important exporters of wood pulp in Austria.

At the end of the 1880s, Adolf Ruhmann's sons Moritz (1858–1936) and Otto Ruhmann (1866–1938) joined their father's paper company, which was renamed “ Guggenbacher Maschinenpapier-Fabrik Adolf Ruhmann ”. The company was expanded, and several wood grinding and paper mills were acquired in Upper Styria.

Adolf Ruhmann managed the company himself until 1904. He died in 1920 and is buried in an honorary grave in Guggenbach.
