Hinterberg is part of the market town of Peggau in the Graz-Umgebung district in Styria .

The land was majority owned by the Sager family and the Vorau Abbey . A large part is still owned by the Vorau Abbey and is only leased. Hinterberg is located south of the Peggauer Wand and is now the largest residential part of the Peggau community. Around 1200 inhabitants live in the district. Sports field and Cafe Hinterberg as well as supermarket chains form the social and commercial center.

Concentration camp branch of the Mauthausen concentration camp

From August 17, 1944 to April 2, 1945, a branch of the Mauthausen concentration camp was set up on expropriated property belonging to the Vorau Abbey near Hinterberg . At the foot of the Peggauer Wand , a tunnel system was put into operation for the underground relocation of parts of the aircraft parts and armor production of the Thondorf plant of Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG . A memorial was erected in 1955 and a memorial was inaugurated on March 24, 2006. ( 47 ° 11 ′ 53.7 ″  N , 15 ° 21 ′ 34.4 ″  E )
